The Surf Coasts own Bombora Custom Furniture specialises in refined recycled timber furniture. A huge range of furniture can be custom designed and built such as dining tables, outdoor tables, coffee tables, beds, bookcases, TV cabinets as well as some more unusual items such as a 3D tree bookcase, outdoor landscaping installations and built in cabinetry.
After moving from Melbourne in early 2012, Bombora Custom Furniture finally settled into its true home at Ashmore Arts nestled in the rolling hills on the edge of Torquay. Bombora began 6 years ago after a necessity for furniture on a small student budget turned into a passion. Word of mouth business kept Luke busy till in 2012 when wife Alison joined the team to turn a part time hobby into a fully-fledged family business.
Luke Collins, the head furniture maker, has an eye for design, creating furniture with a timeless quality and modern costal feel. Recycled Australian hardwoods such as Messmate, Tasmanian Oak, Victorian Ash and Jarrah are the preferred building materials. All pieces are designed to highlight the stunning natural beauty of the timber with heavily featured wood a common thread. Natural finishes such as Tung oil and Danish oil are used to bring out the tones and grain of the wood with a final coat of furniture wax for protection and to create a silky soft feel. These finishes make the piece easy to care for with scratches easy to repair with a new coat of wax. Time is taken with dining tables to fill in all recycled features such as nail holes, sap lines and knot holes with black epoxy resin to ensure there are no little gaps for crumbs to get trapped.
Bombora custom furniture has a substantial portfolio online from which clients can either choose to reproduce or gain inspiration for a piece from. Clients are welcome to come up with their own ideas and images to design a piece from for no extra charge. All furniture is built to order so customers can specify the exact dimensions for their piece so that it fits perfectly into the space it is destined for.
A service that is offered to clients local to the Surf Coast, Bellarine Peninsula and Geelong regions is a home visit from Luke to measure up a space, advise on design for the existing aesthetic as well as custom built in pieces such as shelving, bookcases and bench tops. Potential clients are also welcome to book an appointment to visit the workshop to see what pieces are being built at the time, to look at timber samples and have a chat with Luke. Clients are able to get as involved as they want in the design of their furniture such as coming to the workshop to hand pick the timber they want.
